Jetsam

Plastic trash is pretty rubbish. I don't like it, you don't like it, and local communities certainly don't like it. Jetsam is a tool that turns a walk to the shops in to a citizen science adventure. Users take photos of (primarily plastic) waste, which records location data and shares that with us. The data is aggregated & turned in to various tools to support community groups such as the Plastics Map. We crowd source data labelling of images that users share with us to build stronger insights into waste flows in urban, rural & coastal environments, which in turns strengthens the tools that communities have access to, and can drive change in local government policy & private business impact to the regions that they inhabit. Jetsam is a React Native mobile app that talks to a Koa/Bark.js based processing server & a Timescaledb enhanced Postgresql database. Other niceties include Redis/Hasura/Vault/K8s & more to support various related projects and initiatives. We're currently focusing on specific regions of the south coast in the UK, but let us know if you want it brought to your area - anywhere in the world! Updates incoming imminently to overhaul the whole experience & streamline the app!
