PDFAnnotations

PDFAnnotations.com is a free, privacy-first web utility designed to solve a persistent friction in digital reading: extracting highlights, comment threads, and drawing markups from PDFs and seamlessly moving them into modern personal knowledge management (PKM) systems like Obsidian and Notion. As researchers, students, and knowledge workers, we spend hours annotating papers and contracts. However, existing PDF comment export tools are either clunky (Adobe's proprietary FDF/XFDF formats), locked behind expensive cloud subscriptions (Readwise), or raise serious data privacy concerns by forcing users to upload confidential documents to external servers. PDFAnnotations solves this by extracting highlights and structured comments instantly, for free, with zero registration and zero file uploads required. How I made it (The Maker's Story) I wanted to build a tool that felt incredibly lightweight yet exceptionally secure. The goal was simple: "Drag, drop, and get your Markdown in seconds—completely offline." Instead of taking the easy route of building a traditional Python/Node.js server-side parser, I focused on putting the entire extraction engine right into the user's browser. I spent a lot of time optimizing the metadata parser to preserve rich details like precise RGB colors, author names, timestamps, and nested reply chains. I also designed an interactive "Template Designer" directly in the workspace, allowing users to visually customize how variables (like {{content}}, {{page}}, and {{colorHex}}) render as native Obsidian Callout blocks or Notion databases in real-time. The Stack To ensure lightning-fast performance and absolute security, I built PDFAnnotations using: Next.js & TypeScript: For a fast, responsive single-page application framework and reliable state management. Tailwind CSS: For the sleek, clean, adaptive dark-mode user interface. WebAssembly (WASM): The core PDF parsing engine is compiled to WebAssembly. This allows high-performance binary-level PDF parsing to run entirely client-side, enabling the tool to work 100% offline (you can literally turn off your Wi-Fi and it still processes files instantly).PDFAnnotations screenshot
