Glass Shower Door Buying Guide: 5 Decisions That Determine a 10-Year Result
A shower door gets used roughly 7,300 times over a decade. Most buyers spend more time picking a faucet finish. This guide covers the 5 decisions that actually determine whether a frameless shower door performs well long-term - not just on install day.
DECISION 1 - CONFIGURATION
Match the door type to your bathroom geometry first. Everything else is secondary.
Under 20 inches of swing clearance: sliding or bi-fold only
20-27 inches: sliding preferred
28 inches or more: any configuration - swing door is the premium spec
UKS04 barn-style single sliding: one panel slides fully clear, 90-95% entry clearance, no bottom track, fits 50-65 inch openings
UKD01 double bypass: opens from left, right, or center, fits 56-72 inch openings
UKS13 three-panel bypass: 33% more entry clearance than standard bypass, fits 46-60 inch openings
UKH07 swing pivot door: full-width entry, zero floor hardware, requires 24-28 inches of swing clearance
UKH10 bi-fold: folds inward, zero outward swing required, full-width entry from any opening size
DECISION 2 - GLASS SPECIFICATION
Thickness determines structural performance for the life of the door.
1/4 inch (6mm): entry-level, deflects 55-60% more than 10mm at 30-inch panel width
5/16 inch (8mm): appropriate for framed bypass where frame carries partial structural load
3/8 inch (10mm): correct specification for any frameless door wider than 48 inches
Certification: SGCC plus ANSI Z97.1 means independent laboratory testing. Verify at safetyglazing.org before purchasing.
Glass clarity: Standard clear has 0.1% iron oxide - faint green tint at edges. Optiwhite low-iron glass reduces to 0.01% and delivers 91% light transmittance vs 82-84% for standard clear. Price difference at factory-direct: $50-80 on a standard 60-inch configuration.
DECISION 3 - HARDWARE GRADE
The material determines what the hardware looks like in year 5, not year 1.
Zinc alloy with chrome plating: visually identical to stainless on day one, plating wears through at high-contact points within 3-5 years
304 stainless steel: high corrosion resistance, used for handles and secondary hardware
316 stainless steel: contains molybdenum for chloride corrosion resistance, used for primary structural components including rollers and hinge brackets
Ask for the grade designation before purchasing. If the supplier cannot state 304 or 316, the hardware is almost certainly zinc alloy.
DECISION 4 - COATING
Uncoated shower glass accumulates soap scum and mineral deposits within 4-8 weeks of regular use.
Without coating:
- Weekly cleaning: 15-20 minutes
- Annual deep clean: 2-3 hours
- 10-year total: approximately 200-250 hours
With EnduroShield factory-applied on both sides:
- Weekly cleaning: 3-5 minutes
- Annual mineral removal: 30-45 minutes
- 10-year total: approximately 30-50 hours
That is roughly 170-200 hours of cleaning time eliminated over the life of the door.
Three variables that separate coatings: factory-applied vs aftermarket, one side vs both sides, permanent bond vs renewable treatment. EnduroShield is factory-applied to both sides of every Unikoo frameless panel as standard - not an upgrade.
DECISION 5 - DELIVERED COST
The product page price is not the delivered price.
Sales tax: Unikoo locations are in NJ and CA only. Buyers in the other 48 states pay zero sales tax. At 6-10% state rates that is $40-80 per door.
Freight: A 60-inch frameless door weighs 80-180 pounds and requires LTL freight plus liftgate. Retail channels charge $150-350 separately. Unikoo free nationwide shipping covers the complete delivery chain including liftgate.
Delivered cost in Texas at 8.25% tax:
- Showroom: $950-1,200 + $78-99 tax + $100-200 freight = $1,128-1,499 total
- Big-box: $700-900 + $58-74 tax + $0-100 freight = $758-1,074 total
- Unikoo direct: $650-720 + $0 tax + $0 freight = $650-720 total
