Wall Won't Cooperate? How to Install a Frameless Shower Door on an Out-of-Plumb Wall Without Retiling

Every frameless shower door installation guide assumes the walls are plumb. Most walls in houses built before 1990 aren't — and a significant number of newer ones aren't either. When you hold a 4-foot level against a tiled shower wall and see a gap, you have a practical decision to make: retile the wall, live with a door that doesn't close correctly, or use the adjustment mechanisms already built into frameless shower door hardware to compensate for the deviation without touching the tile. This guide covers the third option — the one that actually gets the door installed this week. Tools and Materials Before starting, gather a 4-foot or 6-foot level, tape measure, pencil and masking tape for marking measurements, metal or HDPE plastic shims (not wood — wood compresses in wet environments), an Allen key set included with most Unikoo door hardware kits, the UKH07RP micro-adjust hinge tool included in the UKH07RP kit, a drill with tile-rated bit, and calipers or feeler gauges for precise shim measurement. Step 1: Measure the Deviation Before Touching Anything The adjustment approach you use depends on how far out of plumb the wall is and whether the deviation is uniform or localized. Measuring first prevents you from choosing the wrong approach. Hold your level vertically against the finished tile surface. The gap between the level and the tile at the widest point is your deviation magnitude. Mark it with masking tape at the top and bottom of the measurement. Then check the distribution: is the gap consistent from top to bottom, indicating a uniform lean, or does it change at mid-height, indicating a bow or wave? A bowed wall — plumb at the top and bottom but convex or concave in the middle — is harder to compensate than a uniform lean, and knowing this upfront changes your approach. Use this as your decision guide. Under 3mm means hardware micro-adjustment only, with no shimming or custom glass needed. From 3mm to 8mm, metal shimming behind wall brackets plus hardware adjustment for residual deviation is the correct approach. From 8mm to 15mm, a custom angled edge cut on the fixed panel glass is needed, and you'll need to submit measurements to the Unikoo custom configuration team. Over 15mm is where fixing the wall becomes the correct answer — the adjustment mechanisms are exhausted at this magnitude. For most renovation work in pre-1980 construction, you'll land in the under-8mm range, which is fully addressable without touching the tile. Approach 1: Hardware Micro-Adjustment for Deviations Under 3mm The UKH07RP hinge includes a built-in lateral adjustment mechanism that moves the hinge body — and therefore the door's pivot axis — up to 3mm horizontally, independent of the wall anchor position. This means you can anchor the hinge to an out-of-plumb wall and then dial the door to hang plumb without moving the anchors. Install the UKH07RP hinge bodies to the wall at the standard anchor positions. Start with the adjustment at the center of its range — don't pre-adjust before the door is hung. Hang the glass panel onto the hinges. The door will initially hang at the angle the wall dictates. Using the micro-adjust tool from the UKH07RP kit, engage the set screw on each hinge. Clockwise moves the hinge body toward the wall; counterclockwise moves it away. Work in small increments — a quarter turn at a time — and check the door edge gap after each adjustment. The target is a uniform gap between the door's latch edge and the adjacent fixed panel or wall seal from top to bottom. Confirm with a level on the door's latch edge: the door should read plumb on the level even if the wall behind it does not. Lock the set screws at the final position once the gap is uniform. What this approach doesn't fix is plumb deviation on the fixed panel wall or out-of-square conditions at the opposite side of the enclosure — this mechanism corrects the hinge axis only. Approach 2: Metal Shimming Behind Wall Brackets for 3mm to 8mm Deviations For deviations beyond the micro-adjust range, or for sliding door systems where hinges aren't the relevant hardware, shimming behind the wall bracket is the correct technique. A shim placed between the bracket back plate and the tile surface moves the bracket face — and therefore the track or glass panel — forward from the wall surface. By using a thicker shim at one end of the installation than the other, you bring the installed hardware to plumb even though the wall beneath it isn't. Shim material matters significantly here. Use stainless steel or HDPE plastic shims only. Wood absorbs moisture in shower environments, compresses over time, and allows the bracket position to drift as it degrades. Silicone and foam compress under load and produce the same result. Metal or hard plastic only. For sliding door top track systems including the UKS04 and UKS13, hold the track level across the opening and measure the gap between the track and the tile at each bracket location — this tells you how much shimming each bracket needs. Cut shims to the dimensions of the bracket back plate, or slightly smaller so the shim doesn't protrude beyond the bracket edge. Place the appropriate shim behind each bracket before drilling anchor holes. If the bracket positions are already drilled, the shims don't change the anchor positions — they only change the stand-off distance. Drill through the shim with the same tile bit used for the anchor holes and install with anchors through shim and into substrate. Confirm the track reads level across its full length with the brackets in final position before hanging the glass. For fixed panel wall clamps, the same principle applies. Shim the back plate of the clamp to bring the clamped glass panel to plumb, independent of the wall surface the clamp is mounted to. One practical limit to be aware of: shimming beyond about 8mm creates a visible gap between the bracket back plate and the tile — a stand-off that traps water and soap residue and is difficult to seal cleanly. If your shim calculation is coming out over 8mm, move to the next approach. Approach 3: Custom Angled Edge Cut for 8mm to 15mm Deviations When the deviation exceeds what shimming can address cleanly, or when the wall has a bow rather than a uniform lean, the solution is a glass panel fabricated with angled vertical edges. An angled edge cut means one or both vertical edges of the glass panel are cut at a slight angle rather than at 90 degrees to the panel face. When this angled edge contacts the out-of-plumb wall, the cut angle compensates for the lean — the glass face hangs plumb even though the wall surface it touches is not. To specify this correctly, measure the wall deviation at a minimum of five points across the installation height, not just top and bottom. A bow or wave in the wall surface only shows up when you have enough measurement points to see the curve. Submit these measurements to Unikoo's custom configuration team along with your opening dimensions. The fabrication team calculates the required edge angle and cuts the glass accordingly. A shop drawing is provided for approval before fabrication. Measurement accuracy is critical with this approach. The angle is calculated directly from the measurements you provide — if the measurements are off, the angle is off and the glass won't fit correctly. Take your time with the measurement step. When None of These Work Three conditions require actual structural correction before the door can be installed. A deviation over 15mm on the hinge wall pushes past the range where hardware adjustment, shimming, and angled cuts produce an acceptable result. At this magnitude the adjustment mechanisms are exhausted and the angled cut angle becomes steep enough to compromise the structural integrity of the glass edge. A bow or wave that changes direction across the installation height — the wall leans one direction at the bottom, is near-plumb at mid-height, and leans the other direction at the top — cannot be addressed with a single adjustment angle or shim thickness. No hardware adjustment corrects a wall that's out of plumb in different directions at different heights. Both walls simultaneously out of plumb in divergent directions, meaning the hinge wall and fixed panel wall each leaning at different angles, produces a cumulative geometric effect on the glass that can't be fully compensated with the mechanisms above. If your measurement falls into one of these three conditions, the wall needs structural correction before the door installation proceeds. In all other cases — which covers the large majority of field conditions encountered in renovation work — the deviation is addressable without touching the tile. One Final Note on Sequence Whichever approach you're using, measure the wall deviation after the tile is fully cured and before any hardware is drilled. Tile installation itself can introduce small plumb changes as adhesive cures and grout sets. Measuring off fresh tile that hasn't fully cured gives you a deviation number that may differ slightly from the number you'll be working with when the hardware goes in. The five minutes spent with a level before drilling saves the hour spent re-drilling anchor positions after discovering the measurement has shifted.
