Bridging Analog and Digital: The Journey of Frames
As a film photographer, I often found myself jotting down exposure settings, film stocks, and other details in notebooks, only to misplace them later. The disconnect between the tactile joy of shooting film and the digital organization of images was glaring. This challenge inspired me to create Frames, a solution to seamlessly integrate analog photography with digital metadata management.
The Problem
In the digital age, photographers benefit from automatic metadata recording—shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and more are embedded into each image. However, film photographers lack this convenience. Essential details are often lost unless meticulously recorded, leading to challenges in organizing, searching, and understanding one's work post-development.
Introducing Frames
Frames is a minimalist app designed for analog photographers to log shooting details and later merge them into scanned images as metadata. Available on iOS and macOS, it offers:
- Detailed Logging: Capture frame number, exposure settings, camera and lens details, film stock, date, time, and geolocation.
- Reference Images: Attach visual references to each entry for context.
- Metadata Integration: On macOS, match logged data with scanned images and embed metadata into JPEGs, making them accessible in software like Lightroom or Apple Photos.
- Privacy-First Approach: No user tracking or cloud dependencies; your data stays local unless you choose to share it.
Tech Stack
Building Frames required a robust and privacy-focused tech stack:
- iOS & macOS Development: Utilized Swift and SwiftUI for a cohesive Apple ecosystem experience.
- Data Management: Employed Swift Data for efficient local storage and data handling.
- Metadata Handling: Integrated native macOS APIs to write EXIF metadata directly into JPEG files.
- Localization: Supported multiple languages to cater to a global user base.
